PETERSEN MEDIA: Continuing to race in his native California as the 2020 season winds down, Tanner Carrick put together a nice run during Saturday night’s 60th Annual Johnny Key Classic that saw him leave the Ocean Speedway with a fifth-place finish.
“We had a super good car all night long,” Tanner Carrick said. “We were able to put ourselves in a good spot heading into the 35-lap feature, but I made a couple of mistakes and then the rubber showed up and I couldn’t really make up the lost ground.”
48 cars checked in at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA and the Lincoln, CA driver timed the CVC/Cemex/Interstate Oil backed No. 83T machine in 11th fastest in time trials.
Needing to pick up the win in his heat race to put himself in the Dash, Carrick would do just that as he proceeded to finish third in the Dash.
Taking the green flag form the inside of the second row in the 35-lap feature event an a very slick surface, Carrick would settle into third in the early goings of the race.
Making a couple of slight mistakes, Carrick would slip back to the fifth spot as he looked for a way to fight his way back to the Top-three.
As the race moved along, the slick track would soon turn abrasive and rubber would begin to go down on the speedway. As the field found the rubber, passing would seemingly cease for the final stanza of the race.
Continuing to hit his marks and keep his spot inside the Top-5, Carrick brought his Saturday night to a close with a fifth-place finish.
“We had to win the Heat to qualify for the Dash, and we did that to put ourselves in a really good spot for the ‘A’,” Carrick added. “Unfortunately I made a couple of mistakes that cost us a few spots and as rubber became part of the equation I was unable to make those back up.”
Tanner Carrick would like to thank CVC, Cemex, Interstate Oil, Conti, Harris and Sloan, Emerald, Timberworks Construction, Kaeding Performance, and Arai for their continued support
